What Is IVMS and Why Is It Mandatory in Saudi Arabia?
In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS) are telematics devices that record and transmit vehicle data including speed, location, driving hours, harsh braking, and acceleration events. The Saudi Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Traffic Authority have mandated IVMS for commercial vehicles as part of Saudi Arabia's national road safety programme.
Which Vehicles Require IVMS?
IVMS compliance is mandatory for: commercial trucks and heavy goods vehicles (HGV); buses and passenger transport vehicles; school buses; tankers and hazardous materials vehicles; and construction equipment that uses public roads. Private light vehicles are not currently mandated but major employers are proactively installing IVMS for driver behaviour management.
Data Requirements
MOT-compliant IVMS must record: vehicle speed (1-second intervals); GPS coordinates with timestamps; harsh braking events; speeding violations; journey start/end times and locations; driver ID (via RFID or biometric); and fuel consumption where available.
